Case IH 3897 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine compression brake low side ECU driver circuit over temperature failure
Issue description
The electronic driver inside the control module responsible for grounding (the "low side") the engine compression brake actuator is overheating. This is typically caused by excessive current draw due to a short circuit in the wiring, a failing actuator solenoid, or an internal fault within the control module itself.

Check the cause
Check Battery Voltage: Verify that the system voltage is not excessively high, as over-voltage can cause the ECU driver to overheat.
Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring between the ECU and the engine compression release valve actuator. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or a short to ground/power on the low-side circuit.
Test the Actuator Solenoid: Measure the resistance of the engine compression brake actuator (solenoid). An internal short in the solenoid will cause it to draw excessive current, which directly overheats the ECU driver.
Check ECU Temperature: Verify if the ECU itself is operating in an environment with excessively high ambient temperatures, which can trigger driver over-temperature faults.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent further damage to the ECU.
Access the Actuator
Locate the engine compression release valve actuator (typically located under the valve cover or integrated into the engine's rocker/exhaust valve assembly, depending on the specific engine model).
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short circuit in the wiring harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness.
Replace the Actuator
If the actuator solenoid failed the resistance test (internal short), remove the faulty solenoid valve and install a new one. Ensure the surrounding hydraulic piston and exhaust tappet areas are clean.
ECU Evaluation
If the wiring and the actuator test perfectly fine, the low-side driver inside the ECU is likely permanently damaged from a previous short or internal failure. The ECU will need to be replaced or sent to a certified CNH repair center.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the fault codes. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
