Case IH 39 – Armrest Controller: Aux 2nd remote valve LEVER potentiometer is failed
Issue description
The potentiometer responsible for sensing the physical position of the 2nd auxiliary remote valve control lever (EHR lever) is sending an out-of-range signal, has failed internally, or has a wiring fault. When this happens, the tractor's computer cannot accurately determine where the operator is positioning the lever.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- Magnum Series (MX180, MX200, MX210, MX215, MX220, MX285, 235-340 Series 4)
- Steiger / Quadtrac Series (385, 430)
- Puma Series (125, 185)
- TG Series
Check the cause
Check the neutral indicator: observe if the green cylinder light on the A-post remains illuminated when the lever is physically in the neutral position.
Perform a physical lever test: pull the affected switch back slightly to see if the green light goes out, indicating the potentiometer's neutral dead-band has shifted (out of calibration or wearing out).
Perform a pressure test: verify the remote is not actually pressurized when the lever is in neutral (e.g., by unhooking and re-inserting a hydraulic hose) to rule out a stuck mechanical valve.
Attempt to recalibrate the EHR switches before replacing the lever.
Repair steps
Calibrate the EHR Levers
Hold the PROG key in while turning the ignition key to the ON position. Navigate through the menu to find the ARM (Armrest) section, where the calibration menu is located. Follow the on-screen prompts: pull the remote levers all the way back, then all the way forward, and finally return them to the neutral position. Turn off the ignition key and wait at least 30 seconds before starting the tractor to test if the calibration saved successfully.
Replace the EHR Lever Assembly
If calibration fails or the code returns, power down the tractor and disconnect the battery. Disassemble the armrest control panel cover to access the EHR lever bank. Disconnect the wire harness from the 2nd remote lever. Remove the mounting screws and extract the faulty lever. Install the new Electro-Hydraulic Remote Lever, secure the mounting screws, and plug in the harness. Reassemble the armrest and perform the EHR Lever Calibration so the Armrest Controller learns the new potentiometer's exact voltage range.
