Case IH 39 – Transmission Controller / ECM: SOL_B_OPEN_OR_GND_DIS_ERR

Clutch Pack (B) Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) Solenoid has a short circuit to ground, an open circuit, or the ECM driver is open. The transmission status lamp (a gear with a slash) will flash in an alternating manner.

   Inspect the wiring harness for a short circuit between ECM connector 1, pin 11 and ECM connector 1, pin 5 wires

   Check for a short across the two solenoid coil terminals or an open circuit within the coil itself

   Verify continuity from the transmission controller to the solenoid to ensure the harness is not broken or rubbed through

   If the wiring and the solenoid coil both test within normal specifications, check for a failed driver inside the Transmission ECM

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Ensure the machine is safely parked before beginning diagnostics.

   Locate the transmission control valve block where the clutch pack solenoids are mounted.

   Identify the location of the solenoids on the transmission.

   Disconnect the electrical connector for the Clutch Pack (B) PWM Solenoid.

   Prepare the solenoid for electrical testing.

   Using a multimeter, test the resistance of the solenoid coil.

   If it reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short, the solenoid coil is faulty and must be replaced.

   If the solenoid tests good, use the multimeter to test the wiring harness back to the Transmission ECM.

   Check pins 5 and 11 on ECM connector 1. Repair any broken wires or corroded connectors.

   If replacing the solenoid, remove the retaining bolt/clip holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge.

   Free the faulty coil from the valve block.

   Slide the old coil off and install the new PWM solenoid coil.

   Install the replacement part.

   Reconnect the wiring harness and clear the fault codes.

   Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's H-Menu/diagnostic display to clear the codes.

   Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure.

   Ensure Clutch Pack B engages smoothly after the repair.
