Case IH 3900 – Engine ECU (Engine Controller): Engine Coolant Temperature Too High (Warning Level, T>110°C)

Issue description

The engine control module has detected that the engine coolant temperature has exceeded the safe operating threshold of 110°C (230°F), triggering a warning level alert to prevent engine damage.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Cooling System Inspection: Check the coolant level in the radiator and overflow reservoir. Inspect the radiator, oil cooler, and front grilles for heavy debris, dirt, or airflow obstructions.

  2. Sensor Plausibility Test (Sensor Fault Cause): Test the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor resistance. On a completely cold engine, compare the ECT sensor reading to the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor reading using a scan tool. The values should be within ± 3°C (5°F) of each other.

  3. Wiring Harness Check (Circuit Fault Cause): Disconnect the ECT sensor and measure the resistance through the harness to the ECU. Check for short circuits to the chassis ground or open wires.

  4. Thermostat Efficiency Check (Physical Overheating Cause): If the sensor is reading accurately but the engine is physically overheating, check the thermostat. The F5C engine thermostat should start opening at 79°C (± 2°C) and reach a 7mm stroke (fully open) at 94°C (± 2°C).

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Allow the machine to cool down completely before opening the cooling system or handling engine components.

  2. Clear Airflow Blockages

    Use compressed air or low-pressure water to blow out the radiator fins and cooling package.

  3. Top Off Fluids

    If the coolant level is low, inspect for leaks (hoses, water pump, radiator) and top off the system with the OEM-specified coolant.

  4. Replace the ECT Sensor (If faulty)

    Disconnect the negative battery cable. Locate the coolant temperature sensor on the thermostat housing/engine block. Disconnect the 2-pin wiring harness connector. Unscrew the old sensor and quickly thread in the new sensor to minimize coolant loss. Torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Replace the Thermostat (If stuck closed)

    Drain the engine coolant into a clean pan. Remove the thermostat housing. Remove the old thermostat and gasket. Install the new thermostat and a new gasket, then bolt the housing back into place. Refill the cooling system and bleed any trapped air.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic service tool to clear fault code 3900. Run the engine up to operating temperature under load to verify the repair.
