Case IH 3903 (F-174-16) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Temperature Sensor: Physical Signal above maximum limit
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the fuel temperature sensor that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold, indicating an electrical fault such as an open circuit, a short to battery voltage in the sensor wiring, or an internally failed sensor.

Check the cause
Locate the fuel temperature sensor (usually mounted on the fuel rail, fuel filter housing, or injection pump) and inspect the electrical connector for loose pins, corrosion, or diesel fuel contamination.
Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the ECU. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to power or an open circuit.
With the key ON and engine OFF, disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify that the ECU is sending the correct 5V reference signal and ground to the connector.
Test the sensor's internal resistance; if it reads completely open (infinite resistance) or shorted, the sensor has failed.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable
to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the fuel temperature sensor on the fuel system housing.
Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.
Depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.
Using the appropriate wrench or deep socket, carefully unscrew the old sensor.
Have a shop rag ready to catch any minor diesel fuel spillage.
Inspect and clean the mounting threads on the housing.
Thread the new fuel temperature sensor into the housing by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the OEM torque specification.
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition ON and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 3903 fault code from the ECU.
Start the engine, check for fuel leaks around the new sensor, and verify that the fault code does not return.
