Case IH 3909 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Crankcase pressure too high

The pressure inside the engine crankcase has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold. The engine control system monitors this to prevent blown seals, oil leaks, and catastrophic engine failure.

   Inspect the Crankcase Breather Filter (Blow-by Filter) for heavy oil sludge, freezing (in cold climates), or physical blockages (most common cause).

   Test the Crankcase Pressure Sensor and its wiring harness. Look for chafed wires, loose connections, or oil intrusion in the 3-pin connector which can cause false high-pressure readings.

   Evaluate engine blow-by. If the sensor and breather are functioning correctly, check for excessive blow-by caused by worn piston rings, scored cylinder liners, or a blown head gasket.

   Locate the Crankcase Breather Assembly

   Find the crankcase ventilation filter housing on the engine block.

   Replace the Breather Filter

   Remove the housing cover, extract the old breather filter element, clean the housing of any residual oil sludge, and install the new filter. Ensure the O-rings/seals are seated correctly.

   Replace the Pressure Sensor

   If the filter was not clogged or the code persists, locate the crankcase pressure sensor. Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector, unthread/unbolt the sensor, and install the replacement unit.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Use a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive DTC 48C3 (3909) code from the Engine ECU. Run the engine up to operating temperature and verify that the crankcase pressure remains within normal parameters and the code does not return.
