Case IH 3912 (F-5380-04) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Fuel metering unit is shorted to ground at the high side
Issue description
The fuel metering unit (also known as the MeUn, MPROP, or fuel pressure control valve) controls the desired fuel flow to the high-pressure fuel rail. This fault indicates that the Engine Control Unit has detected a short circuit to ground on the high side (supply voltage side) of the electrical circuit controlling this valve.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Magnum series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
- Puma series
- Farmall 40-45-50
- A8000 Sugar Cane Harvester
- A8800 Sugar Cane Harvester
Check the cause
Verify if the fault is currently active using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or diagnostic display (inactive codes may indicate an intermittent wiring issue)
Check for related fuel system codes (e.g., 3141/DTC 4465, 3107/DTC 6655, 3735/DTC 8355, or 3137/DTC 5255) and diagnose them concurrently if present
Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the Fuel Metering Unit for chafed wires rubbing against the engine block or chassis
Test the high-side supply wire for continuity to ground
Disconnect the fuel metering unit and test the internal resistance of the solenoid pins to check if the internal coil is shorted to its own housing
Repair steps
Isolate the Short
Disconnect the wiring harness at the fuel metering unit and at the ECU. Use a multimeter to check for a short to ground on the high-side circuit wire.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the multimeter indicates a short circuit in the harness, locate the damaged section of the wire and repair or replace the engine wiring harness as required.
Replace the Fuel Metering Unit (If Wiring is Good)
If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine, the short to ground is internal to the fuel metering unit solenoid. Remove the faulty fuel metering unit from the high-pressure fuel pump assembly and install a new one.
Clean and Reassemble
Ensure the mounting area on the high-pressure pump is clean before installing the new valve to prevent fuel system contamination.
Clear Codes
Reconnect all harnesses, turn the key on, and use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. Run the engine to verify the code does not return and that fuel rail pressure is within normal parameters.
