Case IH 3915 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Rail Pressure Relief Valve - Averaged Rail Pressure Is Outside The Expected Range With Open PRV

The mechanical Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the high-pressure common fuel rail has opened (usually to protect the system from an overpressure event), and the Engine Control Unit is detecting that the average fuel rail pressure has fallen outside the expected safe operating parameters while the valve is in this open state.

   Check the rail pressure sensor to verify it is reading accurately. A sensor falsely reporting high pressure can trigger the PRV to open.

   Test the fuel metering unit (MeUn) on the high-pressure pump (CP3). A stuck or shorting unit can supply maximum fuel volume, causing an overpressure spike.

   Inspect the PRV to determine if it is mechanically stuck open, leaking, or popping off below its rated pressure threshold due to internal spring wear.

   Check for accompanying wear-out code 3916. If present, the PRV has reached its maximum allowed mechanical open time and must be replaced.

   Depressurize system

   Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize completely before opening any lines.

   Remove PRV

   Locate the common fuel rail and carefully unthread the faulty Pressure Relief Valve from the rail.

   Install new PRV

   Thread the new PRV into the common rail and torque it to the exact OEM specification outlined in your specific machine's service manual.

   Address root causes

   If the PRV opened due to a faulty fuel metering unit or rail pressure sensor, replace those components as well to prevent the new PRV from popping.

   Reset ECU data

   Connect the Case IH/CNH diagnostic tool. Navigate to the engine configuration menu and select 'Replacement of the Rail Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) – Reset ECU Data'. Click 'Reset' to clear the PRV wear-out monitoring data from the ECU.

   Clear codes and verify

   Clear the 3915 fault code and run the engine to verify that rail pressure stabilizes within the expected range.
