Case IH 3916 (DTC 1745) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Fuel pressure relief valve has reached maximum allowed open time

This is a wear-out monitoring function for the high-pressure common rail fuel system. The Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) is designed to open and bleed off fuel into the return line to protect the injectors and system if the fuel rail pressure exceeds the maximum safe limit. If the valve stays open longer than the maximum allowed time, or if it opens too many times (e.g., 3 detections in 40 hours), the system flags it as a 'repeat offender' and logs this code. This usually points to a weak/worn PRV, a faulty fuel metering unit, or a severe over-pressure condition.

   Check for related codes such as 3917 (Fuel Rail pressure above maximum limit) or codes related to the Fuel Metering Unit. If the metering unit is commanding too much pressure, the PRV is functioning normally by opening.

   Monitor fuel rail pressure using a diagnostic tool to ensure the pressure is within the expected range and not spiking abnormally.

   Inspect the high-pressure fuel lines, the fuel rail, and the return lines for any signs of leakage or blockages.

   Ensure the machine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has depressurized before opening any lines.

Note: On some systems, the PRV is integrated into the fuel rail, requiring the entire rail to be replaced, though individual valves are widely available for most FPT engines.

   If the PRV blew due to a faulty fuel metering unit or a bad rail pressure sensor, replace those components to prevent the new PRV from blowing again.

   Because this code acts as a wear-out monitor, the engine inducement system may lock the machine into a derate or low-idle state. You must use the dealer service tool (e.g., Case IH EST) to navigate to the 'Engine Restart Counter Reset' screen and reset the PRV counter.
