Case IH 3916 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Pressure Relief Valve: Open time of PRV for wear out monitoring had exceeded maximum value
Issue description
The Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) has been open for a cumulative time that exceeds the ECM's maximum allowed limit. The valve is worn out, can no longer reliably hold normal operating rail pressure, and a severe overpressure event has occurred.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying fuel pressure or metering unit codes (e.g., 3917, 3918, 3107, 3108) to identify the root cause of the overpressure.
Monitor 'Actual' vs. 'Desired' fuel rail pressure using a diagnostic tool (like CNH EST or Jaltest) while the engine is running.
Inspect the Fuel Metering Unit (M-Prop) on the high-pressure fuel pump and its wiring harness for shorts, as this is the most common cause of uncontrolled maximum pressure.
Test the fuel rail pressure sensor to ensure it is not providing falsely high readings to the ECM.
Repair steps
Resolve the Overpressure Source
Diagnose and replace the faulty component causing the pressure spike (typically the high-pressure pump metering unit/actuator or repairing a wiring short).
Depressurize the Fuel System
Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has completely depressurized before opening any lines.
Replace the PRV
Locate the Pressure Relief Valve on the fuel rail. Remove the return line, unthread the worn-out PRV, and install the new PRV. Torque to the manufacturer's specific specification (do not over-tighten, as this can distort the rail).
Reset the ECM Counter
Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), clear the fault codes and perform an 'Engine Restart Counter Reset' or PRV reset procedure to tell the ECM that a new valve has been installed.
