Case IH 3916 (F-5571-16) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Fuel pressure relief valve has reached maximum allowed open time.

The Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) is a mechanical safety valve located at the rear end of the high-pressure common fuel rail. Its job is to protect fuel system components from catastrophic damage by bleeding off fuel into the return system if the rail pressure exceeds safe limits. This code triggers when the Engine Control Unit detects that the PRV has been forced open to relieve excessive pressure and has remained open longer than the maximum time permitted by the software.

   Check for Related Codes: Look for active codes related to the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor or the High-Pressure Flow Regulator (Fuel Metering Unit). If the pressure sensor fails to report accurately, the ECU may command the pump to over-pressurize the rail, forcing the PRV open.

   Fuel Supply Pressure Test: Verify that the low-pressure fuel supply between the fuel filter and the high-pressure pump inlet is at least 5 bar (72 psi) with the engine loaded or unloaded.

   Vacuum & Air Intrusion Test: Ensure vacuum between the low-pressure pump inlet and the tank does not exceed 5 inches of Hg (127 mm Hg). Plumb a clear line to check for air bubbles entering the system, which can cause erratic pressure spikes.

   PRV Leak Test: Disconnect the fuel return line from the PRV. If the valve is leaking more than a few drops per minute while the engine is running at normal pressure, the internal spring is weakened and the valve has failed.

   Safety First

   Turn off the engine and allow the machine to sit so the high-pressure fuel rail can depressurize. Never crack high-pressure fuel lines on a running common-rail engine.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the fuel rail and the area around the PRV to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

   Remove the Valve

   Disconnect the fuel return line from the PRV at the rear of the fuel rail. Unthread and remove the old pressure relief valve from the rail.

   Install the New Valve

   Thread the new PRV into the fuel rail. Torque the valve strictly to the OEM specification found in your engine's specific service manual (over-tightening can distort the rail; under-tightening will cause leaks).

   Reassemble and Bleed

   Reconnect the return line. Prime the fuel system to purge any air.

   Clear Codes

   Start the engine and check for leaks. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 3916 fault code. If the machine is locked in an inducement derate, perform the Engine Restart Counter Reset.
