This code indicates an over-pressurization event in the common rail fuel system. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the fuel rail pressure has exceeded the maximum safe limit while being actively regulated by the Fuel Metering Unit (MeUn). This usually points to a mechanical sticking of the metering unit, a restricted return line, or a failure of the pressure relief valve to vent excess pressure.

   Check for air ingress and inlet restrictions using a clear test line with a pressure gauge between the fuel filter and the inlet of the high-pressure pump (low-pressure supply should maintain a minimum of 5 bar/72 psi under load).

   Inspect the fuel pre-filter, main fuel filters, and Voss O-ring fittings for blockages or air leaks, and check the fuel tank for debris.

   Check ECU wiring harness for loose contacts or short circuits between the Fuel Metering Unit (MeUn) and the ECU.

   Inspect the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) at the rear end of the fuel rail to see if it has been forced open by the over-pressurization event.

   Relieve System Pressure

   Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has fully depressurized before opening any lines.

   Resolve Low-Pressure Issues

   If the diagnostic checks revealed low supply pressure or air in the lines, replace the primary and secondary fuel filters and clean the fuel tank/lines.

   Test/Replace the Fuel Metering Unit (MeUn)

   If the wiring to the ECU is intact but the rail pressure remains uncontrollably high, the Fuel Metering Unit (located on the high-pressure injection pump) is likely mechanically stuck or failing to pulse correctly. Remove and replace the MeUn.

   Replace the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)

   If the rail pressure exceeded the maximum limit, the mechanical PRV on the fuel rail has likely been compromised or triggered. A weakened PRV will cause subsequent low-pressure codes or poor fuel economy. Remove the old PRV from the rear of the fuel rail and torque the new valve to OEM specifications.

   Use the diagnostic service tool to clear the 3917 fault code. Run the machine under load (e.g., hydrostatic stall or dynamometer) to verify that rail pressure tracks the ECU setpoint without exceeding the limit.
