Case IH 3929 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Fuel pressure control Pressure Relief valve: maximum rail pressure in limp home mode with PRV and empty fuel tank

A severe over-pressure event in the common rail fuel system where the fuel rail pressure exceeded the maximum safe tolerance limit while the engine was operating in limp home mode, forcing the mechanical Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) to open. Once forced open, the PRV often fails to reseat properly and continuously leaks rail pressure, leading to hard starting, rough running, or fuel starvation.

   Check for air ingress by installing clear tubing on the fuel supply line to observe if air is entering the system.

   Test low-pressure supply by verifying the gear (lift) pump pressure. Check for restrictions if fuel pressure drops below 0.276 bar (4.0 psi) under load.

   Inspect the fuel pre-filter, primary filter, and secondary filter for clogs. Inspect the fuel tank for debris and ensure the tank cap is venting properly.

   Check the Voss O-ring fittings on the fuel lines for leaks or damage.

   Test the Fuel Metering Unit (FCA/MeUn) on the high-pressure pump to ensure it is not stuck in the 'full feeding' position and has not lost electrical power.

   Check the rail pressure sensor at the end of the fuel rail to verify it is accurately reading and transmitting pressure data to the EDC.

   Relieve System Pressure

   Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has completely depressurized before opening any lines.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the fuel rail and surrounding area to prevent dirt from entering the open rail.

   Disconnect the Return Line

   Remove the Voss coupler/return line attached to the Pressure Relief Valve.

   Remove the PRV

   Unthread the faulty Pressure Relief Valve from the fuel rail.

   Install the New PRV

   Thread the new replacement valve into the fuel rail and torque to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect Lines

   Reattach the return line and Voss coupler.

   Prime the System

   Use fresh, filtered fuel to prime the system. Replace fuel filters if any contamination was found during diagnostics.

   Test Operation

   Start the engine and use a diagnostic tool to monitor rail pressure. Verify that the pressure reaches normal operating levels under load without spiking or forcing the new PRV open.
