Case IH 394 – Engine Controller (ENG) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Front Timing current is too low.

Issue description

This indicates an electrical fault—specifically an open circuit, broken wire, or high resistance—in the circuit controlling the front timing actuator/solenoid on the engine's fuel injection pump. Because the current is lower than the expected threshold, the engine controller cannot properly command the timing of the fuel delivery for the front bank of cylinders.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the Engine ECM to the CAPS pump for chafed wires, broken lines, or heat damage that would cause an open circuit.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the CAPS pump's front timing actuator and inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture ingress.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the front timing actuator on the pump itself. An infinite reading (OL) indicates the internal coil has failed and is completely open.

  4. Turn the key ON and verify that the ECM is sending the proper reference voltage and ground to the actuator connector.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the CAPS Pump

    Locate the CAPS fuel injection pump on the side of the engine. Clean the area around the pump to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector in the harness, splice in a new section of wire or replace the pigtail connector.

  4. Replace the Actuator/Pump

    If the front timing actuator coil itself is dead (open circuit), the actuator module must be replaced. Note: On CAPS pumps, individual actuators are often not serviced separately in the field without specialized calibration. In most cases, the entire CAPS pump or the distributor module is replaced as a remanufactured unit.

  5. Reassemble and Bleed

    Reconnect all electrical plugs. If the pump was replaced, reconnect all fuel lines and bleed the fuel system of air.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use a diagnostic service tool (like Case IH EST or Cummins INSITE) to clear the inactive fault codes and verify the repair.
