Case IH 3941 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): ECU Temperature Sensor: Signal above maximum limit.
Issue description
The internal temperature sensor located inside the Engine Control Unit has detected a temperature that exceeds the maximum safe operating threshold (typically above 115°C). This indicates either the ECU is physically overheating due to external factors or internal electrical shorts, or the internal temperature sensor component has failed and is reporting an erroneously high signal.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Farmall
- Maxxum
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Axial-Flow combines
Check the cause
Carefully feel the exterior of the ECU to determine if it is physically overheating or if the internal sensor is defective (cool to the touch).
Inspect the ECU mounting location for external heat sources such as missing heat shields, exhaust leaks, or blocked airflow.
Check the ECU wiring harness and power supply lines for overvoltage conditions or short circuits that could cause an over-current situation and rapid internal overheating.
Ensure the machine's overall engine coolant and ambient temperatures are within normal operating ranges.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety before working on the electrical system.
Address External Heat
If your diagnostics revealed missing heat shields or exhaust leaks near the ECU, repair these issues first.
Remove the ECU
If the ECU is internally defective, disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the EDC module. Unbolt the ECU from its mounting bracket on the engine block or firewall.
Install Replacement
Mount the new or remanufactured Engine Control Unit and reconnect the wiring harnesses securely.
Programming
A replacement ECU will be blank or locked. You must use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the ECU with the correct machine software, engine calibration, and to sync the immobilizer/chassis serial number.
Test
Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and run the machine under load to verify the 3941 code does not return.
