3944

Case IH 3944 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Torque or speed control demand from VCM Retarder exceeding the maximum time.

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) is requesting the engine to retard (reduce torque or speed) for a duration that exceeds the maximum allowable time limit programmed into the engine's software.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Patriot sprayers

Check the cause

  1. Check for related active fault codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), specifically CAN bus communication errors or VCM-generated errors (codes 3385-3392).

  2. Inspect the physical retarder or braking system to verify it is not mechanically stuck and causing a continuous retard command.

  3. Inspect the J1939 CAN bus wiring harnesses and connectors between the VCM and ECM for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  4. Check the current software versions of both the ECM and the VCM for logic errors.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port to retrieve all active and stored DTCs.

  2. Troubleshoot Wiring

If CAN communication codes are present alongside 3944, perform a continuity and resistance test on the CAN bus wiring between the VCM and ECM. Repair or replace any damaged harness sections.

  3. Update Software

If no wiring issues are found, flash the VCM and ECM with the latest software updates from CNH. Software updates often resolve logic errors regarding retarder timeouts.

  4. Replace the VCM

If the wiring is intact, the software is up to date, and the physical retarder mechanism is not stuck, the VCM is likely suffering from an internal hardware failure and is outputting a faulty continuous signal. Replace the VCM.

  5. Clear and Test

Clear the fault codes using the EST. Test drive the machine under load and engage the retarder/braking system to verify that the torque reduction command functions normally and times out correctly without triggering the code.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Vehicle Control Module (VCM)

    239951A2

For certain legacy combines. Must be programmed/flashed with the CNH EST tool to match the specific machine upon installation.

  • Vehicle Control Module (VCM)

    118400-138

Capstan-supplied VCM for Patriot sprayers. Must be programmed/flashed with the CNH EST tool to match the specific machine upon installation.

  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

    3944105

For some 8.3L/8.9L applications. Only replace if the ECM is proven to be misinterpreting a normal VCM signal.

  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Connectors

Standard J1939 Deutsch connectors and twisted-pair CAN wire.
