Case IH 3948 – ENGINE: EGR Lift Sensor 1 Signal Too High
Issue description
The engine control module has detected that the voltage signal returning from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) lift sensor is exceeding the maximum expected threshold.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and pigtail connector at the EGR valve for chafing, melted wires, or corrosion.
Disconnect the EGR lift sensor, turn the key to the ON position, and measure the reference voltage and ground at the connector to check for a short to battery voltage.
Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor live data. If voltage remains high when unplugged, the wiring harness is shorted to power. If it drops to zero, the sensor is internally shorted.
Remove the EGR valve and inspect the housing for heavy soot or carbon buildup, which can mechanically jam the valve and force a high-voltage reading.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Allow the engine and exhaust components to cool completely.
Access the EGR Valve
Locate the EGR valve assembly, which is mounted between the exhaust manifold and the intake/EGR cooler. Remove any heat shields or intake piping obstructing access.
Disconnect Electrical
Unplug the electrical connector from the EGR valve/lift sensor assembly.
Remove the Valve
Remove the mounting bolts (e.g., M8 bolts) securing the EGR valve to the housing/cooler. Carefully extract the EGR valve.
Clean Mating Surfaces
Remove the old gasket. Use a scraper and solvent to clean the carbon and soot from the mounting flange and the EGR cooler port. Do not let debris fall into the intake.
Install New Part
Install the new EGR control valve with a new gasket.
Torque
Tighten the mounting bolts to the OEM torque specification.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness, reinstall any heat shields or piping, and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 3948 fault code. Start the engine, let it reach operating temperature, and verify that the code does not return.
