Case IH 395 – Engine Controller (ECM): Front Timing current is too high.

The engine controller detects an abnormally high current draw on the front timing circuit of the fuel injection pump.

   Inspect the wiring harness running between the Engine Controller (ECM) and the CAPS fuel injection pump for rubbed wires, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage on the front timing circuit.

   Disconnect and inspect the connectors at the ECM and the CAPS pump Stator/Injection Control Valve (ICV) for corrosion, pushed pins, or moisture.

   Test the transient suppressor for proper operation, as it is a known failure point on CAPS systems that can cause electrical anomalies.

   Ohm test the pins on the CAPS pump stator to determine if the internal solenoid for the front timing circuit has shorted out, causing the high current draw.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's batteries to prevent damage to the ECM during testing and repair.

   Isolate the Fault

   Using a multimeter, verify if the short (high current) is in the engine wiring harness or internal to the CAPS pump stator.

   Repair Wiring

   If the harness is shorted, repair the damaged section of the wiring or replace the engine harness.

   Replace the Stator / ICV

   If the wiring tests good but the stator is internally shorted, the CAPS pump Stator (Injection Control Valve) must be replaced. Remove the mounting bolts holding the stator to the CAPS pump body and install the new unit.

   Replace the Transient Suppressor

   It is highly recommended by Cummins/Case IH specialists to replace the transient suppressor whenever replacing a failed CAPS stator to prevent repeat failures.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the batteries, turn the key on, clear the inactive fault codes from the ECM, and test run the tractor to verify the "Front Timing current is too high" code does not return.
