Case IH 3950-00 - BCM – BCM: Tractor horn - too many loads or faulty load

The Body Control Module is detecting an excessive current draw on the horn circuit. This is typically caused by a failing horn assembly (internal short circuit), damaged wiring causing a partial short, or unauthorized aftermarket accessories (like extra lights or air compressors) being spliced directly into the factory horn circuit.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the horn for any aftermarket accessories (extra horns, sirens, or lighting) that may have been spliced into the circuit, causing the 'too many loads' condition

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the horn assembly to isolate the horn

   With the horn disconnected, attempt to activate the horn. Check if the active fault code changes from 3950-00 (faulty load) to 3950-05 (circuit open). If it does, the wiring and BCM are functioning correctly, indicating the horn assembly itself is internally shorted

   If the code remains or changes to 3950-06 (short to ground), inspect the wiring harness between the BCM and the horn for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Remove Unauthorized Loads

   If aftermarket devices were found spliced into the horn circuit, remove them and repair the factory wiring using heat-shrink butt connectors. Route aftermarket accessories to their own dedicated fused relay circuit.

   Replace the Horn

   If internally shorted, locate the factory horn assembly, unplug the weather-sealed electrical connector, remove the mounting bolt securing the horn bracket to the chassis, install the replacement horn assembly and tighten the mounting bolt, and reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

   Test and Clear

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and test the horn. Verify via the AFS Pro monitor that the 3950-00 BCM fault code has moved from 'Active' to 'Inactive' and clear the code history.
