Case IH 3960 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Intake Throttle Valve Position is lower than expected.

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is commanding the intake throttle valve to a specific position (to regulate fresh airflow for EGR mixing, thermal management, or DPF regeneration), but the position sensor feedback indicates the valve is physically stuck or reading at a lower angle than commanded.

   Check the intake throttle valve for physical binding or being stuck due to heavy carbon, soot, or oil lacquer buildup.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the intake throttle valve for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or damaged pins.

   Verify that the sensor supply voltage and battery voltage to the valve actuator are within normal specifications.

   Use a diagnostic service tool (such as the EST) to manually actuate the intake throttle valve and monitor the position sensor feedback to see if the valve moves smoothly or binds.

   Turn off the machine, ensure the engine is cool, and disconnect the battery.

   Locate the intake throttle valve on the engine's air intake manifold/piping.

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the intake throttle valve and inspect the terminals for corrosion or damage.

   Remove the intake hoses/piping connected to the throttle valve.

   Unbolt and remove the intake throttle valve assembly from the intake flange.

   Inspect the valve plate and bore for heavy carbon or soot deposits. If contaminated, use a professional EGR & Intake cleaner to dissolve the deposits.

   If the valve was merely stuck due to carbon, reinstall and test. If the internal motor or position sensor has failed (or if it still binds after cleaning), the intake throttle valve assembly must be replaced.

   Install the new intake throttle valve using new press-in-place seals/gaskets.

   Reconnect the intake piping and the electrical connector.

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using your diagnostic tool, and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
