Case IH 3961 (DTC ED2D) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): CAN communication failure - External torque/speed checksum and counter

The external request for torque or speed control via the CAN bus was disturbed, interrupted, or received a checksum error. Essentially, the engine is failing to properly receive or validate torque/speed commands from the machine's network.

   Connect a diagnostic service tool to verify DTC ED2D / 3961 is active. Check for secondary ECU internal failure codes (such as ED36 or EE1D) which might indicate a software or calibration error rather than a wiring issue.

   Inspect the CAN bus wiring and cables connecting the Engine ECU to the CAN controller for visible damage, chafing, or corrosion.

   Test the CAN bus circuit for proper resistance and continuity to ensure there are no open or short circuits in the CAN High and CAN Low lines.

   Verify the proper operation of the CAN controller (ABS / ASR / ESP or general machine CAN controller).

   Turn off the key and disconnect the battery ground cable before performing any electrical repairs.

   If diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring, repair or replace the affected sections of the CAN bus wiring harness or connectors.

   Ensure all pins are seated tightly and reconnect the harness to the Engine ECU and CAN controller.

   If the wiring is completely intact and the CAN controller is functioning normally, the Engine ECU itself may have an internal failure or calibration error. In this case, contact technical support to re-flash the ECU software or replace the Engine ECU entirely.

   Reconnect the battery ground cable.

   Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) using the service tool.

   Start the engine and operate the machine under load to verify that the torque/speed control requests are functioning normally and the fault code does not return.
