Case IH 3961 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): External torque / speed access via CAN BUS: checksum and counter error of request

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving invalid, interrupted, or corrupted CAN bus messages regarding external torque or speed requests from another module. The checksum or message counter in the data packet does not match the expected values, pointing to a communication failure, wiring issue, or software mismatch on the CAN network.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Magnum 180
  • Magnum 200
  • Magnum 220
  • Magnum 240
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380
  • Steiger 370
  • Steiger 420
  • Steiger 470
  • Steiger 500
  • Steiger 620
  • Axial-Flow 7240
  • Axial-Flow 8240
  • Axial-Flow 9240

Check the cause

  1. Check the proper operation of the CAN controller and look for other active CAN bus fault codes (such as ABS, ASR, or ESP controller faults) that might indicate a failed module bringing down the network

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the vehicle/transmission controllers for opens, shorts, chafing, or corrosion

  3. Verify battery voltage and ground connections to the ECU, as voltage drops can disrupt sensitive CAN communication

  4. Check for software updates or calibration errors in the ECM, as internal software resets or mismatches can trigger checksum errors

Repair steps

  1. Power down and disconnect battery

Power down the machine and disconnect the battery before servicing the ECU or wiring harness.

  2. Disconnect harness connectors

Locate the Engine ECU and the requesting module (e.g., transmission controller). Disconnect their harness connectors.

  3. Inspect and clean pins and terminals

Inspect the pins and terminals for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Check CAN lines resistance

Perform a continuity and resistance check on the CAN High and CAN Low lines using a multimeter. The resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic port should be approximately 60 ohms (with the battery disconnected and all modules plugged in).

  5. Repair or replace wiring

Repair or replace any damaged sections of the CAN bus wiring harness or faulty connectors.

  6. Address internal failure or software

If the wiring is completely intact and the fault persists, the Engine ECU or the requesting module may have suffered an internal failure or require a software re-flash by a dealer.

  7. Reconnect, clear codes, and test

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using an Electronic Service Tool (EST), and test drive the machine under load to verify the repair.
