Case IH 3966 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU temperature sensor voltage is higher than expected
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from its temperature sensor that exceeds the normal operating parameters, typically pointing to an open circuit or a short to a high voltage source.

Check the cause
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor live data for the ECU temperature to see if the reading is maxed out or erratic.
Determine via the machine's schematic whether the ECU temperature sensor is an external plug-in sensor or an internal component of the ECU (often an internal board-level sensor).
If the sensor is external, inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion at connectors. Test the circuit for continuity to ground and check for a short to battery voltage.
Check the Engine ECU grounding to ensure clean, tight connections to the chassis, as a floating ground can cause artificially high voltage readings.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Harness Repair
If diagnostic testing revealed a short to power or an open wire in the harness leading to an external sensor, repair the damaged wiring and replace the connector pins as necessary.
Sensor Replacement
If the wiring is intact but an external ECU temperature sensor failed the resistance test, remove the old sensor, install the replacement, and torque to OEM specifications.
ECU Replacement
If the temperature sensor is integrated internally into the Engine ECU and the internal circuit has failed, the Engine ECU cannot be serviced in the field. The ECU must be removed and either sent to a qualified CNH electronics repair facility or replaced entirely.
Verification
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the CNH EST to clear the inactive fault codes. Run the engine and perform a Repair Verification Test to ensure code 3966 does not return.
