Case IH 3972 – ENGINE: Intake Throttle Motor Driver Circuit Invalid

Issue description

Indicates an electrical issue where the engine control module is receiving an invalid signal, voltage, or detecting an open/short in the driver circuit responsible for operating the intake throttle motor (throttle body actuator).

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Steiger series tractors
  • Magnum series tractors
  • Maxxum series tractors
  • SR175 Skid Steer Loaders
  • SSL (Skid Steer Loaders)
  • CTL (Compact Track Loaders)
  • L220

Check the cause

  1. Operate the machine while monitoring the instrument display for abnormal readings

  2. Perform a visual inspection of the mechanical units and the engine wire harnesses. Check for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or melted insulation leading to the intake throttle motor

  3. Inspect the electrical connector at the intake throttle motor for corrosion, moisture, pushed-back pins, or loose connections

  4. If no physical damage is found and the display indicates normal readings, erase the fault code and continue operation to see if it was an intermittent glitch

  5. If the code returns, use a multimeter to verify continuity and check for shorts to ground or power in the throttle motor driver circuit between the Engine ECU and the throttle actuator

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate intake throttle valve/motor

Locate the intake throttle valve/motor on the engine's air intake system (between the intercooler/charge pipe and the intake manifold).

  3. Disconnect wiring harness

Disconnect the wiring harness from the throttle motor.

  4. Repair harness or connector

If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or a faulty connector, repair the harness or splice in a new connector pigtail.

  5. Unbolt throttle body assembly

If the wiring tests perfectly but the driver circuit is still reporting as invalid, the internal electronics of the intake throttle motor have likely failed. Unbolt the throttle body assembly from the intake piping.

  6. Install new intake throttle valve

Clean the mating surfaces and install the new intake throttle valve with a new gasket/seal.

  7. Reconnect harness and battery

Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  8. Clear fault codes and verify

Clear the fault codes from the Engine ECU memory and run the engine to verify the repair.
