3975

Case IH 3975 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Intake Throttle Valve Stuck

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors the position of the intake throttle valve. This fault is logged when the ECU detects that the mechanical system is not responding to control commands, is out of adjustment, or is physically stuck open/closed.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Case IH / New Holland Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Case IH SR175
  • Case IH Steiger tractors

Check the cause

  1. Visually and mechanically inspect the intake throttle valve to see if it is stuck open, not closing properly, or has a binding/broken shaft or excessive carbon buildup.

  2. Disconnect the wiring harness from the ECU and intake throttle valve, then use a multimeter to check resistance and continuity for open lines or shorts to ground/power.

  3. Verify the sensor by checking if the ECU supplies a reference voltage and ground; if wiring is good but position cannot be read, the sensor or actuator motor has likely failed.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the engine and allow all service fluids and engine components to cool down. Handling components at temperatures exceeding 49 °C (120 °F) poses a burn hazard.

  2. Disconnect Harness

Locate the intake throttle valve on the intake manifold. Pull the lock operation portion on the harness connector to release the lock, and disconnect the harness from the valve.

  3. Remove Air Duct

Loosen the clamps and remove the air duct/hoses connected to the intake throttle valve.

  4. Remove the Valve

Remove the mounting hardware securing the intake throttle valve to the intake assembly and remove the unit.

  5. Clean or Replace

If the valve is merely stuck due to carbon deposits, clean the assembly. If the shaft is broken, the motor has failed, or the sensor is defective, replace the entire intake throttle valve assembly.

  6. Reinstallation

Install the new/cleaned intake throttle valve, reconnect the air duct, and securely plug in the wiring harness connector.

  7. Software Calibration

Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes. Depending on the exact model, you may need to perform a software calibration for the new intake throttle valve to restore self-learning parameters in the ECU.
