   Check for accompanying active codes related to EGR valve position (e.g., 3973), EGR motor signals (e.g., 3974), or DPF/PMCat flow resistance (e.g., 3978, 3979) which indicate a hard failure rather than a maintenance reminder.

   Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to perform a function test of the EGR gas valves and blower by manually commanding the valve to open and close to ensure the actuator is not mechanically stuck.

   Visually inspect the EGR valve, EGR cooler, and intake manifold for excessive carbon and soot blockages that restrict exhaust gas flow.

   Safety First

   Ensure the engine is completely cool. The EGR system handles exhaust gases that can exceed 1,300°C (2,400°F) during operation, and the coolant will be hot.

   Drain Coolant

   Drain the engine coolant to prevent spills when removing the water-cooled EGR cooler.

   Remove Components

   Disconnect the heavy-duty exhaust piping and coolant hoses. Unbolt and remove the EGR Control Valve and the EGR Cooler from the exhaust manifold.

   Clean the System

   Thoroughly clean the carbon and soot buildup from the EGR valve and the reinforced tubes inside the EGR cooler. If the valve is heavily clogged and cannot be cleaned to operate smoothly, it must be replaced.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the EGR cooler and EGR valve using new gaskets. Reconnect all piping and hoses.

   Refill Fluids

   Refill the engine coolant and bleed the cooling system.

   Reset the ECU

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and perform the 'Procedure To Restore Self Learning Parameters' to reset the EGR maintenance timer and clear the 3976 fault code from the Engine ECU.
