Case IH 3977-00 - BCM – Body Control Module (BCM): Dome light constant power - too many loads or faulty load
Issue description
This is a Body Control Module (BCM) lighting system fault indicating a circuit overload. The BCM monitors the current draw on the courtesy lighting circuits. The "-00" suffix and "too many loads or faulty load" description mean the BCM has detected that the current (amperage) being pulled through the dome light circuit exceeds the maximum rated threshold. This is typically caused by a short-to-ground (a pinched or chafed power wire touching the chassis), a melted bulb socket, or aftermarket accessories being improperly spliced into the dome light circuit.

Check the cause
Check the dome light circuit for any aftermarket accessories (e.g., CB radios, auxiliary LED strips) tapped into the power wire.
Inspect the wiring harness running from the dome light down the A-pillar to the BCM for chafed, pinched, or bare wires shorting to the cab frame.
Test the door jamb switch voltage with a multimeter: with the door closed, the signal should be a steady 0V (ground); with the door open, it should read the 5V reference voltage.
Check the BCM harness connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins causing false overload readings.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent accidental shorts or further damage to the BCM during repair.
Isolate the Circuit
Remove the dome light bulb and disconnect any aftermarket accessories sharing the circuit.
Check for Shorts
Use a multimeter set to continuity to test the dome light power wire against a known chassis ground. If there is continuity, there is a short in the wiring harness.
Repair Wiring
Trace the harness to locate the short (commonly found near roof trim edges or door jambs). Cut out the damaged section of wire, splice in a new section using proper crimp connectors, and seal with heat shrink.
Replace Faulty Components
If the wiring is intact but the door switch contacts are pitted or the housing is cracked, replace the door jamb switch. If the dome light socket is melted, replace the dome light assembly.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the BCM fault codes. Open and close the cab doors to verify the dome light operates correctly without tripping the circuit.
BCM Replacement (Worst Case)
If the wiring is perfect but the code immediately returns as a hard fault (or is accompanied by permanent failure codes like U3000), the BCM's internal driver for the dome light may be permanently burned out. In this case, the BCM must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
