3977-03 - BCM

Case IH 3977-03 - BCM – Body Control Module (BCM): Dome light constant power - short circuit to B+

Issue description

A short circuit to B+ indicates that the circuit is shorted to a higher-than-normal voltage source (Battery Positive / 12 Volts). In the context of a dome light, this means the wiring harness or the control module is providing constant 12V power to the dome light circuit, bypassing the normal switch or door-ajar logic. This results in the dome light staying on constantly, which can drain the battery or trigger a circuit protection fault.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • AFX8010
  • 7230
  • 8230
  • 9230
  • WD1903
  • WD2303 Series II
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • 9370
  • 9380
  • 9390

Check the cause

  1. Switch Testing: Check the operation of the dome light switch. Test for power going into the switch and power leaving the switch at the appropriate contacts. A mechanically stuck or internally shorted switch is a common culprit.

  2. Harness Inspection: Inspect the Cab Roof Harness. Check the wiring connecting the cab roof to the dome light (e.g., Connector X296 - Cab Roof Harness to Dome Light E-34) for chafing or pinched wires shorting to a constant 12V source (such as power from fuse F-52).

  3. BCM Output Test: Disconnect the dome light and test the BCM output pin. If the module constantly outputs 12V even when the door is closed and the switch is off, the BCM likely has an internal short (a common failure point for constant power issues).

Repair steps

  1. Isolate Power

Turn off the master disconnect switch or disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage or accidental shorts.

  2. Access the Circuit

Remove the cab headliner or access panels to reach the dome light assembly and the cab roof wiring harness.

  3. Inspect Connectors

Disconnect the dome light connector (e.g., Connector X296) and inspect the pins for melting, corrosion, or bridging.

  4. Trace and Repair Wiring

Trace the power wire (e.g., Circuit 965 RD) back to the fuse panel and BCM. Repair any sections of the wire that have rubbed bare and are touching another constant power wire.

  5. Replace Components

If the wiring is intact but the switch fails the continuity test, replace the switch. If the BCM is internally shorted, the Body Control Module must be replaced or cloned.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the Case IH Customer Electronic Service Tool (EST), and verify the dome light turns on and off correctly with the doors and switches.
