Case IH 3977-06 - BCM – BCM: Cab Dome Light 2 - Current above normal or grounded circuit

A short circuit to ground on the constant power circuit supplying the cab's interior dome light. The control module monitors the current draw; if the power wire touches a ground source or the dome light assembly is internally shorted, the current spikes and the module shuts down the circuit to prevent wiring damage or fire.

   Check the specific fuse for the dome light circuit in the cab fuse panel (a dead short to ground will typically blow this fuse immediately).

   Isolate the component vs. wiring: Remove the dome light assembly, disconnect it, insert a new fuse, and turn on the battery disconnect. If the code changes to 'Open Circuit' (FMI 05) or the fuse no longer blows, the short is inside the dome light assembly.

   Test the wiring harness: If the fuse still blows or the code remains active with the light disconnected, use a multimeter set to Ohms to probe the power supply wire and a known good chassis ground. A reading near 0 Ohms confirms a chafed wire touching bare metal.

   Inspect common pinch points in the cab roof wiring harness (e.g., Connector X296), where the harness routes through the headliner, down cab pillars, or near metal mounting brackets.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the master battery disconnect switch or remove the negative battery cable to prevent further electrical damage.

   Access the Harness

   If the diagnostic checks pointed to a wiring issue, remove the necessary cab headliner panels to expose the dome light wiring harness.

   Repair the Wire

   Trace the power wire back toward the BCM until you find the chafed or pinched section. Cut out the damaged section of copper wire and splice in a new section using marine-grade, heat-shrink butt connectors to ensure a moisture-proof repair.

   Replace the Component

   If the short was internal to the dome light, discard the old unit and plug the new OEM dome light assembly into the harness.

   Reassemble

   Secure the wiring harness away from sharp metal edges using zip ties or edge clips. Reinstall the cab headliner and snap the dome light assembly back into place.

   Test and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, replace the blown fuse with one of the exact same amperage, and test the dome light. Connect your electronic service tool (EST) to the diagnostic port and clear the 3977-06 fault code from the BCM.
