Case IH 3977 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Module): Prefilter fuel pressure sensor voltage is higher than expected.

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving a signal voltage from the prefilter fuel pressure sensor that exceeds the maximum calibrated threshold, typically caused by a short circuit to a power source, an open circuit on the sensor's ground wire, or an internally failed sensor.

   Visually inspect the prefilter fuel pressure sensor (mounted near the primary fuel filter/water separator), wiring harness, and connector for chafing, bare wires, or moisture/corrosion.

   Perform a ground circuit test to check for an open circuit in the sensor's ground wire, which can cause the signal voltage to float high.

   Verify the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage from the Engine ECU.

   Test the signal wire for a short-to-voltage (e.g., rubbed against a 12V power wire).

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator assembly.

   Depress the locking tab on the prefilter fuel pressure sensor connector and unplug it.

   If the diagnostic checks above revealed damaged wiring, repair the harness using OEM-approved waterproof splices or replace the pigtail connector.

   If the wiring tests good, the sensor itself has failed internally. Unthread the faulty sensor from the filter housing.

   Thread the new piezoresistive fluid pressure sensor into the housing.

   The OEM sensor features a precision male metric thread with a pre-installed rubber O-ring; do not over-tighten.

   Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks into place.

   Reconnect the battery.

   Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 3977 fault code, or cycle the key to see if the active code clears. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks and verify the code does not return.
