Case IH 3977 – Engine ECU (ISM-DI or ISM-IDI): Perform Maintenance On EGR Timing 1-2
Issue description
This is a maintenance reminder and signal range check indicating that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system has reached a service interval or requires timing maintenance/inspection.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- skid steer
- Steiger series tractors
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- SR175
- TR270B
- Farmall series tractors
- 55C
- 105U
- 115U
Check the cause
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to retrieve active fault codes and verify 3977 is present.
Check for accompanying EGR codes (3976, 3675, 3676, 3677) that indicate a hard failure rather than just a maintenance prompt.
Inspect the physical condition of the EGR valve for excessive carbon buildup, which can restrict movement and throw off timing parameters.
Verify the Engine ECU memory and dataset are functioning correctly by checking for codes like 3971 or 3980.
Repair steps
Access the EGR valve
Locate the EGR valve on the exhaust/intake manifold assembly.
Clean or replace
Thoroughly clean the valve of carbon soot buildup. If the valve is sticking or the position sensor is failing, replace the entire EGR valve assembly.
Reassemble components
Reinstall the EGR valve and ensure all electrical connections to the position sensor and motor are secure.
Restore self-learning parameters
Using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), navigate to the engine controller menu and execute the Procedure To Restore Self Learning Parameters. This is crucial if the valve was serviced or replaced.
Clear codes and test
Clear the 3977 fault code and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
