Case IH 3979 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Unit): Plausibility check: Measured fuel pressure upstream gear pump is higher than the possible physical maximum in this operating point.
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the low-pressure fuel circuit using a fuel pressure sensor located upstream of the high-pressure fuel pump. Code 3979 is triggered when the sensor reports a fuel pressure value that exceeds the maximum physically possible pressure for the engine's current operating state. This typically indicates either an actual overpressure condition in the low-pressure circuit (e.g., a blocked return line or stuck bypass valve) or an electrical failure (e.g., a short to voltage) causing the sensor to max out its reading.

Check the cause
Check Sensor Wiring and Connector: Inspect the wiring harness and connector for the low-pressure fuel sensor. Look for chafing, corrosion, or a short to voltage.
Test Sensor Voltage: Using a digital multimeter, check the sensor's reference voltage (typically 5V on pin 3), ground (should be <500mV on pin 1), and signal wire (pin 2).
Mechanical Fuel Pressure Test: Connect a mechanical fuel pressure gauge to the low-pressure fuel circuit to verify the actual physical pressure. Compare the mechanical gauge reading to the live data on your diagnostic scan tool.
Check Fuel Return Lines: If the mechanical gauge also shows abnormally high pressure, inspect the fuel return lines to the tank for kinks, blockages, or restrictions.
Inspect the Gear Pump Bypass/Relief Valve: Check the mechanical gear pump's internal bypass/relief valve to see if it is stuck closed, which can cause an actual overpressure condition.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool. Wear safety glasses and gloves. Relieve any residual fuel pressure if opening the system.
Access the Sensor
Locate the fuel pressure sensor upstream of the gear pump (often mounted on the fuel filter housing or low-pressure fuel line).
Disconnect the Harness
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Using an appropriate wrench or deep socket, unthread the faulty fuel pressure sensor from its mounting port. Have a shop rag ready to catch any spilled diesel fuel.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM fuel pressure sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect the Harness
Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Clear Codes and Test
Turn the key to the ON position. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 3979 fault code from the Engine ECU. Start the engine, check for fuel leaks around the new sensor, and verify that the code does not return and that live fuel pressure readings are within normal parameters.
