Case IH 3980 – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU): Measured fuel pressure upstream gear pump is less than the possible physical minimum
Issue description
The engine control system has detected that the fuel pressure in the low-pressure supply circuit (upstream of the high-pressure gear pump) has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold for the engine's current operating load and speed. This indicates that the high-pressure fuel pump is being starved of fuel.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Steiger series (350 HD, 600, 620)
- Magnum series (250, 280, 340)
- Puma series (140 through 220)
- Maxxum series (110, 120)
- Farmall series
- Axial-Flow series (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Patriot series (3340, 4440)
- Case N-Series Backhoes
- G-Series Wheel Loaders (521G, 621G, 721G)
Check the cause
Verify the fuel tank has adequate fuel and that the pickup tube is not drawing air
Inspect the primary fuel filter and water separator for clogs (most common cause of low upstream pressure)
Check the suction lines from the fuel tank to the pump for collapsed hoses, kinks, or blockages
Check for air leaks on the intake/suction side of the fuel system, which can starve the pump
Plumb a mechanical pressure gauge into the low-pressure circuit to verify if the pressure is actually low
If the mechanical gauge shows healthy pressure but the ECU still reads low, inspect the fuel pressure sensor and its wiring harness for shorts, corrosion, or damage
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Replace Filters
Drain the fuel/water separator. Remove and replace the primary fuel filter/water separator element, as this resolves the majority of fuel restriction codes.
Bleed the System
Prime the fuel system to remove any trapped air introduced during the filter change.
Test Run
Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and run it under load. If the code clears, the repair is complete.
Sensor Replacement
If the code persists and a mechanical gauge confirms the actual fuel pressure is within spec, replace the faulty fuel pressure sensor.
Lift Pump Replacement
If the mechanical gauge confirms the pressure is genuinely dropping under load and no line restrictions exist, replace the low-pressure fuel supply pump (lift pump).
Clear Codes
Use an EST (Electronic Service Tool) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the fault codes from the Engine ECU.
