3980

Case IH 3980 – Engine ECU: ISM-IDI Engine ECU Memory Failure

Issue description

Critical internal hardware or software failure within the module's memory (EEPROM), meaning the controller is unable to properly read its own programmed data or self-learning parameters.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Case IH and New Holland Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Case SR175
  • SV-series
  • TR-series

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify that code 3980 is active and not a stored historical code.

  2. Verify if there are any accompanying voltage supply codes, which can sometimes cause memory read glitches.

  3. Confirm that 3980 is an isolated code, which verifies an internal failure of the ECU itself requiring replacement.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing or further module damage.

  2. Remove the ECU

Locate the Engine ECU on the machine, disconnect the wiring harness connectors, and unbolt the module.

  3. Install the New ECU

Mount the replacement Engine ECU and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  4. Reprogramming / Calibration

Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to write the ECU serial number into the new engine ECU, restore self-learning parameters, and write the correct Injector Codes to the new ECU (if applicable).

Parts you might need
