Case IH 3986 – ENGINE: ISM-IDI Fuel Solenoid Short Circuit

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an abnormally high current draw or a direct short to ground/power in the electrical circuit that controls the fuel shutoff solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the fuel solenoid. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points against the engine block that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the fuel solenoid harness. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent terminals that could bridge the circuit.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the terminals of the fuel solenoid itself. If the multimeter shows zero or near-zero ohms, the internal coil of the solenoid is shorted and the unit must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: With both the ECU and the solenoid disconnected, test the signal wire for continuity to ground. If there is continuity, the wiring harness is shorted to the chassis and needs to be repaired.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine's ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate solenoid

    Locate the fuel shutoff solenoid, typically mounted directly on the fuel injection pump.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.

  4. Remove mounting hardware

    Remove the mounting hardware (usually small bolts or a threaded collar) securing the solenoid to the pump housing.

  5. Remove old solenoid

    Carefully pull the old solenoid out. Note: Be cautious not to drop any internal plungers, springs, or rubber insulators into the pump housing.

  6. Install new solenoid

    Clean the mounting surface. Install the new fuel solenoid and tighten the mounting hardware to OEM torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  8. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  9. Verify solenoid operation

    Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (do not start) and listen for an audible "click" from the solenoid, verifying it is receiving power and actuating.

  10. Clear fault code

    Start the engine and use a CAN-bus diagnostic scan tool to clear fault code 3986. Run the machine to verify the code does not return.
