3988

Case IH 3988 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ISM-IDI Fuel Solenoid Position Sensor High Voltage

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the fuel solenoid position sensor (also known as the rack position sensor or throttle solenoid) is higher than the expected maximum range, indicating a short to power in the sensor circuit, an open ground wire, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Case SR130
  • Case SR160

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the fuel solenoid position sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to power.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals.

  3. Use a multimeter to check the sensor's ground circuit for continuity to the ECU. An open ground will cause the sensor signal voltage to default high.

  4. Check the signal wire for a short to a 5V or 12V power source. If the wiring harness tests good, the sensor itself has likely failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to protect the electronic systems.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the fuel solenoid, which is installed into the rear of the injector housing on the ISM engine.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.

  4. Removal

Unbolt and remove the faulty fuel solenoid from the injector housing.

  5. Installation

Install the new fuel solenoid into the rear of the injector housing.

  6. Torque

    Torque the fuel solenoid to 14.7 - 24.5 N·m (11 - 18 lb ft).

  7. Reconnect

Reconnect the electrical connection to the new solenoid.

  8. Finalize

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the fault codes. Start the engine and verify that code 3988 does not return.
