Case IH 3988 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbine downstream pressure sensor voltage is lower than expected

The engine control system has detected that the voltage signal returning from the turbine downstream pressure sensor has dropped below the acceptable minimum threshold. This typically points to an electrical issue such as a short circuit to ground, an open circuit in the sensor wiring, or an internally failed sensor.

   Inspect the exhaust system and muffler for physical damage, severe exhaust leaks, or disconnected piping that could cause an actual lack of exhaust pressure.

   Trace the wiring harness from the turbine downstream pressure sensor back to the ECU. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or a disconnected plug.

   Disconnect the sensor and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

   Use a multimeter or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the sensor's voltage. Verify if the circuit is shorted to a low source (ground) or if the sensor is completely dead.

   Safely Secure the Machine

   Park the equipment on a level surface, set the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key. Allow the exhaust system to cool completely, as the sensor is located on the hot exhaust aftertreatment piping.

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the turbine downstream pressure sensor, which is mounted on the exhaust system downstream of the turbocharger/catalyst.

   Disconnect the Harness

   Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or broken wire in the harness, repair the wiring using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors and re-loom the harness away from extreme heat sources.

   Replace the Sensor (If Applicable)

   If the wiring is intact, the sensor itself has likely failed. Unthread the old sensor from the exhaust piping. Install the new sensor and tighten it to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect and Clear Codes

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port, clear the inactive 3988 fault code, and run the engine under load to operating temperature to verify the code does not return.
