Case IH 3992 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ISM-IDI Diesel Particulate Filter Soot Level Full

Issue description

The engine management system has detected that the soot accumulation inside the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has reached its maximum allowable threshold. This restricts exhaust flow, increases exhaust backpressure, and prevents normal passive regeneration, which can lead to engine derating or potential damage.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • SR130
  • SR160
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • SV250
  • SV300
  • TR series
  • TV series
  • Farmall 85C
  • Farmall 95C
  • Farmall 105U
  • Farmall 90N
  • Farmall 90V
  • Quantum series

Check the cause

  1. Read Accompanying Fault Codes: Check the ECU for other codes related to the EGR system, fuel injectors, or turbocharger.

  2. Monitor Sensor Data: Use a diagnostic tool (like Jaltest or CNH EST) to monitor live soot and ash levels, and inspect the readings from the DPF differential pressure sensor and exhaust temperature sensors for plausibility.

  3. Inspect for Excessive Soot Production: Verify that the engine is not producing excessive soot. Common culprits include low turbocharger boost pressure, poor combustion, leaking fuel injectors, or a stuck EGR valve.

Repair steps

  1. Address Underlying Faults

Repair any underlying engine faults (such as turbocharger leaks or EGR valve issues) that caused the excessive soot buildup.

  2. Perform a Manual/Forced Regeneration

Park the machine in a safe, well-ventilated area. Using the in-cab manual regeneration button or a diagnostic service tool, initiate a forced regeneration. The ECU will inject additional fuel to raise the exhaust temperature (up to 600°C) to burn off the trapped soot.

  3. Monitor the Process

Keep an eye on the exhaust temperatures and differential pressure during the regen process to ensure the soot is actively burning off.

  4. Physical Cleaning

If the DPF is too clogged to regenerate (or if the manual regen fails), the DPF must be physically removed from the exhaust system. Send the removed DPF to a professional cleaning service to have the soot and ash baked and blown out.

  5. Replacement

If the filter substrate is cracked, melted, or cannot be cleaned, replace the DPF assembly with a new or remanufactured OEM unit.

  6. Reset ECU Parameters

After cleaning or replacing the DPF, reinstall the unit, clear the fault codes, and use a diagnostic tool to reset the DPF soot/ash self-learning parameters in the Engine ECU.
