3999

Case IH 3999 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECM engine fault not converted in CNH module

Issue description

The emissions system (SCR/DEF) has detected a fault of the same class type more than three times within a 40-hour operating window, triggering a maximum inducement (engine derate or idle lock) and preventing emergency restarts until reset via dealer software.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma series
  • Steiger series
  • Magnum series
  • Farmall series
  • Axial-Flow Combines (7230, 8230, 9230)

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  2. Check for the underlying active urea/DEF system faults that caused the inducement lock (e.g., NOx sensor implausibility such as Code 17538, DEF quality sensor timeouts, or DEF dosing issues).

  3. Acknowledge that the inducement lock must be cleared before you can properly verify the physical repair of the underlying emissions fault.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Navigate to Configuration

Navigate to the Configuration menu/icon in the EST.

  3. Select reset screen

Select the "Engine Restart Counter Reset / Unlock Inducement" screen.

  4. Configure item

    Click on "CONFIGURE SELECTED ITEM".

  5. Reset counter

Click the button "RESET ENGINE RESTART COUNTER / UNLOCK INDUCEMENT" to clear the inducement lock.

  6. Resolve root cause

Once the system is unlocked, follow the appropriate diagnostic procedure to resolve the specific DEF/AdBlue system faults that originally triggered the lock.

  7. Verify repair

Finally, perform the SCR Fault Repair Verification Test using the EST to ensure the root cause is fully resolved before returning the machine to service.
