Case IH 4 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: Hitch Raise Solenoid Failed Open or Shorted to Ground

The control module has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for raising the rear hitch. Specifically, the circuit is either broken (open circuit) or the voltage is bleeding off to the chassis (shorted to ground), preventing the solenoid from actuating the hitch raise valve.

   Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness between the TMF/Hitch controller and the hitch raise solenoid. Flex the harnesses to reveal any intermittent breaks, rubbed-through insulation (causing a short to ground), or loose connectors.

   Jumper Wire Test (Bypass): Install a test jumper wire directly from the controller's output pin to the hitch raise coil connector. Reconnect all other connectors, start the tractor, and command the hitch to raise. If it raises, the factory wiring harness has a break or short. If it does not raise, the hitch raise solenoid coil or the valve itself has failed internally.

   Resistance Check: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the hitch raise solenoid coil to verify if it has failed open (infinite resistance).

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Hitch Valve Block

   Locate the rear hitch hydraulic valve assembly (typically mounted near the rear axle/rockshaft).

   Harness Repair

   If the jumper test proved the wiring was at fault, trace the harness back to the TMF controller, locate the short/break, splice in a repair wire using weather-sealed connectors, and re-loom the harness.

   Solenoid Replacement

   If the solenoid failed, unplug the electrical connector from the hitch raise solenoid, remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, slide the old solenoid coil off, slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem, tighten the retaining nut, and reconnect the electrical harness.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the tractor's display monitor or an Electronic Service Tool to clear the inactive fault code. Operate the machine to verify the hitch raises normally and the code does not return.
