Case IH 4016 – DV Module: Signal from Remote valve Timer Pot 1 - out of range (DV module only)

Issue description

This code indicates that the electronic signal coming from the timer potentiometer for the #1 auxiliary remote valve is outside of its expected voltage or resistance range. This typically points to a failed potentiometer, a short/open circuit in the wiring harness, or a poor connection at the module.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the armrest console and the wiring harness leading to the remote valve timer potentiometers for pinched wires, chafing, or liquid intrusion.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the #1 remote valve timer potentiometer and the DV module. Check for bent pins, corrosion, or loose terminals.

  3. Turn the key ON. Verify that the potentiometer is receiving the correct reference voltage (usually 5V) and has a solid ground from the module.

  4. Using a multimeter, perform a sweep test by measuring the signal wire's voltage or resistance while slowly turning the timer dial from 0 to 60 seconds. The reading should change smoothly without any dropouts or spikes. If the reading is erratic, stuck at 0V, or stuck at reference voltage, the potentiometer is internally failed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during disassembly.

  2. Access the Armrest Console

Remove the retaining screws holding the upper cover of the multicontroller armrest to expose the internal circuit boards and potentiometers.

  3. Remove the Faulty Potentiometer

Locate the timer potentiometer for Remote Valve #1. Disconnect its electrical connector. Unbolt or unclip the potentiometer from its mounting bracket on the armrest panel.

  4. Install the New Part

Seat the new potentiometer into the mounting bracket and secure it. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks into place.

  5. Reassembly

Carefully reinstall the armrest cover, ensuring no wires are pinched in the plastic housing.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON and use the tractor's diagnostic display menu to clear the inactive 4016 fault code. You may need to navigate to the "Control module - Configure" menu to recalibrate the Electronic Draft Control (EDC) and remote valves so the module learns the new potentiometer's exact sweep values.
