Case IH 4039 – HITCH Controller: Invalid Config - Left and Right Draft Pin voltages are outside the normal operating range

Issue description

The electronic draft load sensing pins, which measure the mechanical load on the 3-point hitch, are sending voltage signals to the controller that fall outside of the expected operating parameters. Because both the left and right pins are reporting out-of-range voltages simultaneously, it typically points to a dual sensor failure, a shared wiring harness issue, or a configuration error.

Check the cause

  1. Check System Voltage: Verify that the tractor's battery voltage is within normal limits. Hitch controller codes 8001 and 8002 can cause sensors to report out-of-range voltages.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness and plastic weather connectors leading to both the left and right draft sensing pins for pinched wires, corrosion, or a short to ground/12V.

  3. Check Hitch Calibration: Ensure the hitch controller configuration is correct and that the raise/lower valve thresholds are properly calibrated.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery.

Option A: Install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit.

  2. Locate the left and right draft sensing pins on the 3-point hitch assembly and unplug the factory wiring harness from both pins.

Option A: Install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit.

  3. Take the two electronic load sensing elimination modules included in the kit and plug them directly into the tractor's wiring harness where the pins were connected.

Option A: Install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit.

  4. Secure the new modules and harness safely out of the way using tie wraps.

Option A: Install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit.

  5. Reconnect the battery and turn the key on.

Option A: The elimination modules will send a fixed, 'normal' voltage signal to the Hitch Controller. The diagnosis system will no longer detect defective pins, fault code 4039 will clear, and draft sensing will be permanently disabled.

  6. Support the 3-point hitch safely.

Option B: Replace the Draft Sensing Pins.

  7. Disconnect the wiring harness from the defective draft pins.

Option B: Replace the Draft Sensing Pins.

  8. Remove the mechanical retaining hardware holding the draft pins in the lower link arms.

Option B: Replace the Draft Sensing Pins.

  9. Drive out the old draft pins and install the new OEM draft sensing pins.

Option B: Replace the Draft Sensing Pins.

  10. Reinstall the retaining hardware and reconnect the wiring harness.

Option B: Replace the Draft Sensing Pins.

  11. Clear the fault codes and recalibrate the hitch controller if required by the service manual.

Option B: Replace the Draft Sensing Pins.
