Case IH 4043 – Universal Control Module (UCM) or ECU: Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor Shorted To Ground

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the hydraulic oil temperature sensor that is below the minimum acceptable range. The system interprets this near-zero voltage as a direct short to ground, which can be caused by an internally failed sensor or a compromised wire in the harness touching the machine's chassis.

   Verify the active fault code on the instrument cluster.

   Locate the hydraulic oil temperature sensor and disconnect its electrical harness.

   Turn the key to the ON position. If the fault code changes from 4043 (Shorted to Ground) to 4044 (Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor Open Circuit), the wiring harness is intact, and the sensor itself has failed internally and is shorting out.

   If the code remains 4043 with the sensor unplugged, the short is located in the wiring harness.

   Use a digital multimeter to test the sensor's signal wire for continuity to ground. Inspect the wiring harness routing from the sensor back to the UCM for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation rubbing against the frame.

   Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms completely, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   If the diagnostic checks pointed to a harness issue, trace the wire back to the UCM, locate the bare or pinched wire, and repair it using electrical solder and heat-shrink tubing.

   If the sensor is the culprit, clean the area around the sensor mounting port to prevent debris from entering the hydraulic system.

   Often located on the hydraulic reservoir tank, filter base, or PFC pump inlet manifold.

   Place a catch pan beneath the sensor to catch any residual hydraulic fluid.

   Unthread the faulty sensor using a wrench.

   Thread the new OEM hydraulic oil temperature sensor into the port.

   Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can damage the brass threads).

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Reconnect the battery, turn the machine on, and verify that the 4043 fault code has cleared.

   Top off the hydraulic fluid if any was lost during the swap.
