Case IH 4045 – Arm Rest Module (ARU) / DV Module: Controller Fault (Data Memory) / ARU Controller Fault (data memory) (DV Module Only)

Issue description

This code indicates an internal hardware or software failure within the controller's data memory (EEPROM/RAM). The module has failed its internal register or read/write check, meaning it can no longer reliably store or retrieve operational data, calibration values, or configuration settings.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Case IH Puma Series (140, 165, 175, 180, 195, 210)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285, 235-340)
  • Case IH Steiger Series (280, 330, 380, 430, 530, 535)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated active DTCs (such as CAN bus errors like 4042 or voltage codes like 4040/4041) and resolve power supply or CAN communication issues first, as severe voltage spikes can cause temporary memory read errors.

  2. Attempt to clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool (like Case IH EST or Jaltest) and power cycle the tractor to see if the code returns.

  3. Attempt to re-flash the ARU software if the diagnostic tool allows.

  4. If the code is hard/active and cannot be cleared, or if the flash fails, the internal data memory is permanently corrupted or physically damaged, and the module must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts or CAN bus spikes during removal.

  2. Access the ARU

Remove the trim panels and cover of the Multicontroller armrest to expose the internal electronics.

  3. Remove the Module

Carefully unplug the main wiring harnesses connected to the Arm Rest Module (ARU) / DV Module. Remove the retaining screws/bolts and extract the faulty controller.

  4. Install the New Module

Mount the replacement ARU and securely reconnect all wiring harnesses. Reassemble the armrest trim.

  5. Configuration and Calibration

Because the data memory stores tractor-specific settings, a new module will be blank or have default settings. You must use the tractor's "H" menu (e.g., H2, H3, H8 menus on the display) or a diagnostic tool to configure the module to the tractor's options (e.g., tire size, transmission type).

  6. Sub-system Calibrations

You must recalibrate the sub-systems controlled by the ARU, including: Electronic Draft Control (EDC) Valve, Transmission Clutches (Quickfill settings), Rear PTO Hydraulic torque sensor, and Differential lock steering angle sensor.
