Case IH 4056 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Main Machine Control Module / Vehicle Control Unit (VCU): Park Brake Valve (On / Off) Solenoid Supply Shorted To Ground
Issue description
This is a 'Red' level (critical) fault indicating that the electrical circuit supplying power to the Park Brake Valve Solenoid has found an unintended path to ground. This means the voltage is going directly to the machine's chassis/ground before properly passing through the solenoid coil, or the coil itself has suffered an internal short. When this occurs, the controller disables the circuit to protect the system, which typically prevents the parking brake from releasing.

Check the cause
Visual Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the ECU to the Park Brake Valve Solenoid. Look for areas where the wire loom may have rubbed against the chassis, transmission housing, or hydraulic lines, exposing bare copper wire to the metal frame.
Connector Check: Disconnect the solenoid and inspect the pins for water intrusion, corrosion, or melting that could bridge the power supply pin to the ground pin.
Test the Harness: With the battery disconnected, unplug the harness from both the ECU and the solenoid. Use a digital multimeter to check for continuity between the solenoid supply wire and the machine's chassis ground. Continuity indicates a shorted harness.
Test the Solenoid Coil: Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the two pins of the park brake solenoid coil. A reading near 0 Ohms or continuity between the power pin and the metal casing indicates an internal short.
Repair steps
Isolate the damaged section of the wire.
If the wiring harness is shorted.
Cut out the chafed/melted wire and solder in a new section of wire of the same gauge.
If the wiring harness is shorted.
Seal the repair with marine-grade heat shrink tubing and re-loom the harness, routing it away from sharp edges or high-vibration rub points.
If the wiring harness is shorted.
Park the machine on a flat surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
If the Solenoid Coil is internally shorted.
Locate the Park Brake Valve block.
Usually mounted on the transmission housing, near the hydraulic pump, or on the main control valve block.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.
Remove the retaining nut at the top of the solenoid valve stem.
Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.
Note: You do not need to remove the hydraulic cartridge valve itself, which prevents fluid loss and the need to bleed the system.
Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem.
Reinstall and tighten the retaining nut.
Do not overtighten, as this can distort the coil.
Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.
Turn the key on, clear the fault codes from the display, and test the park brake engagement/disengagement to ensure the code does not return.
