Case IH 4057 – Transmission Controller (TCU) or Vehicle/Chassis Controller: Park Brake Valve (On / Off) Solenoid Supply Shorted To Power

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical supply circuit for the park brake release solenoid is shorted to a 12V power source. The controller is seeing voltage on this circuit even when it is not actively commanding the park brake solenoid to energize, or it is detecting an improper voltage level indicating a cross-short in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Perform an operational check: move the transmission control lever to Park and verify the 'P' icon is displayed. Move to Neutral and ensure it turns off. If it stays on or throws a fault, the circuit is compromised.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness from the Transmission/Vehicle Controller to the Park Brake Valve assembly for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation rubbing against a 12V wire.

  3. Perform a voltage test: disconnect the 2-pin connector at the Park Brake Solenoid. With the key ON and machine in Park, probe the supply pin. A 12V reading indicates a short to power in the harness.

  4. Measure the coil resistance across the pins of the Park Brake Solenoid to ensure the coil has not internally shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts during repair.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the Park Brake Valve assembly. On tractors, this is typically mounted on the transmission housing or the main regulated pressure hydraulic valve stack.

  3. Isolate the Short

    If the diagnostic voltage test revealed a short to power in the harness, trace the wire back to the controller. Repair the damaged section of the wiring harness by cutting out the fused/chafed wires, splicing in new wire, and sealing it with heat-shrink tubing.

  4. Replace the Solenoid (if faulty)

    If the harness is intact but the solenoid coil is internally shorted or melted: Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the old coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new 12V coil onto the stem and tighten the retaining nut.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector to the solenoid.

  6. Test

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on, clear the 4057 fault code from the monitor, and start the machine. Cycle the transmission lever from Park to Neutral to ensure the park brake releases and the code does not return.
