Case IH 4081 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Forward Pump Control Valves (Directional) Pumps Forward Solenoid(s) Shorted To Power

This code indicates a critical electrical fault where the circuit controlling the forward directional solenoid on the hydrostatic drive pump is receiving unintended voltage (shorted to a power source). This prevents the controller from properly regulating the forward movement of the machine.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the hydrostatic pump control valve for pinched wires, melted insulation, or rubbing against a 12V power source or bare metal.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the forward pump control solenoid and measure resistance across the coil pins; near zero indicates an internal short.

   With the key ON (engine off) and solenoid disconnected, probe the harness-side connector for 12V on the return/ground wire to check for a harness short to power.

   Inspect UCM pins and the solenoid connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge power and control circuits.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts or UCM damage during repair.

   Locate the Valve

   Access the hydrostatic drive pump assembly (usually located under the cab, requiring the cab to be tilted forward on skid steers). Locate the directional control valve block on the pump.

   Remove the Faulty Solenoid

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the forward drive solenoid. Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, and slide the coil off. (If the cartridge valve itself is damaged, you will need to unthread the cartridge from the pump block—have a catch pan ready for hydraulic fluid).

   Install the New Solenoid

   Slide the new solenoid coil over the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's torque specification (do not overtighten, as this can distort the valve).

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic tests pointed to a harness short rather than a bad solenoid, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section of the wire, or replace the affected harness section.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the battery, lower the cab, and clear the UCM fault codes using an electronic service tool (EST) or the in-cab display. Test drive the machine in a safe, open area to verify forward drive functionality.
