Case IH 41 – Transmission ECM: CLUTCH PACK (A) PULSE WIDTH MODULATED SOLENOID SHORT CIRCUIT TO GROUND OR OPEN CIRCUIT OR ECM DRIVE OPEN
Issue description
The Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) solenoid that controls Clutch Pack A has suffered an electrical failure (short to ground, open circuit, or an open ECM driver). When this code is active, the solenoid cannot hydraulically pressurize or de-pressurize the clutch pack, rendering it inoperable. The transmission status lamp will flash, and the transmission may be disabled or limited to Hi-Forward and Reverse only.

Check the cause
Wiring Harness Inspection: Check for a short to ground or an open circuit between ECM connector 1, pin 10 and the solenoid coil terminal.
Return Circuit Inspection: Check the wiring between ECM connector 1, pin 6 and the solenoid coil terminal.
Coil Terminal Test: Check for a short circuit directly across the two solenoid coil terminals.
Diagnostic Menu Test: If equipped with a CDU (Control Display Unit), check the H9, Channel 8 value. The fault triggers if this value falls below 200 counts.
ECM Driver Test: Verify if the internal ECM driver itself is open or shorted to ground.
Repair steps
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the Power Shuttle Control Valve Assembly on the transmission. Identify the Clutch Pack (A) PWM solenoid, which is the bottom, horizontal solenoid on the assembly.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal broken, chafed, or shorted wires between ECM Connector 1 (Pins 6 and 10) and the solenoid, repair or replace the damaged wiring harness section.
Replace the Solenoid
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil fails resistance testing or has an internal short, remove and replace the Clutch Pack (A) PWM Solenoid Coil.
Replace/Repair ECM
If both the wiring and the solenoid test perfectly, the internal driver in the Transmission ECM has failed and the ECM must be replaced or sent out for repair.
Clear the Code
Once the physical repair is complete, the cause must be resolved and the error must be cleared using the tractor's CDU (Control Display Unit) or a dealer diagnostic tool to restore full transmission functionality.
