Case IH 4101 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Control Module: Rear Remote No.1 - Implausible EHR Control Messages

Issue description

The system is receiving an invalid, erratic, or missing CAN bus communication signal from the electronic pilot head (the electronic actuator module) mounted on Rear Remote Valve No. 1. This typically locks out the hydraulic functions for that specific remote as a failsafe.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series (235, 250, 260, 280, 290, 310, 315, 340, 370, 380)
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac Series (350, 370, 400, 420, 450, 470, 500, 540, 550, 600, 620)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the pilot head on Remote Valve No. 1 for bent pins, corrosion, moisture ingress, or chafed wires.

  2. Perform a pilot head swap test by swapping the electronic pilot head from Remote No. 1 with a known-working pilot head from another remote (e.g., No. 2 or No. 3). If the fault code changes to follow the swapped head, the pilot head is internally faulty.

  3. Ensure the mechanical spool inside the valve body is not physically sticking or binding due to contamination or wear.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve hydraulic pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers to relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Locate valve

Locate Rear Remote Valve No. 1 on the rear hydraulic valve stack.

  3. Clean valve area

Thoroughly clean the area around the top of the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the faulty pilot head.

  5. Remove pilot head

Remove the retaining bolts securing the electronic pilot head to the mechanical valve body and carefully lift the pilot head off.

  6. Install new pilot head

Install the new pilot head onto the valve body, ensuring all O-rings/seals are properly seated, and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Reassign/calibrate EHR valves

Turn the key ON. Use the tractor's AFS Pro display (or a dealer diagnostic tool) to reassign/calibrate the EHR valves so the controller maps the new pilot head to Remote No. 1.
