4103

Case IH 4103 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear remote no. 1 – switched to failsafe

Issue description

The system has detected an anomaly with the Rear Remote Valve No. 1 (such as a calibration error, internal EEPROM fault, or communication issue). To prevent unintended hydraulic operation, erratic flow, or equipment damage, the controller has disabled the valve and placed it into a protective "failsafe" mode.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Steiger T4B
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum series (235, 245, 260, 290, 315, 340)
  • Steiger series (350 to 600)
  • Puma series (130, 145, 160, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
  • Maxxum / MXU series
  • Farmall series (115U Pro EP)

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying EHR fault codes (e.g., 4100, 4101, 4104-4112) such as under voltage or faulty potentiometer to pinpoint the exact electrical or mechanical failure.

  2. Power cycle the tractor by turning it off, waiting a few moments, and turning the key back on to clear potential temporary communication glitches.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the Rear Remote No. 1 valve (often connector X305) for corrosion, pushed pins, or wire chafing.

  4. Attempt to recalibrate the remote valve spool using the tractor's display monitor or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) in case it lost its calibration point.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Access the Valve Stack

Locate the rear remote valve block at the rear of the tractor. Identify the No. 1 valve slice (usually the first one in the stack).

  3. Disconnect Harness

Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the No. 1 EHR valve slice.

  4. Remove the Valve Slice

Unbolt the tie rods holding the remote valve stack together. Carefully slide out the faulty No. 1 remote valve slice, ensuring you do not lose or damage the O-rings between the slices.

  5. Install the New Valve

Install the replacement EHR valve slice with new O-rings. Re-torque the valve stack tie rods to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Reconnect & Calibrate

Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes, and use the tractor's display or EST to perform the mandatory valve spool calibration procedure.

  7. Test

Start the tractor, check for hydraulic leaks, and verify normal operation of the No. 1 remote.
